COW's Mission: Nothing less than to end the war in Iraq, bring our troops home safely, and change our national priorities from a war based on lies to health care, jobs and proper treatment of our suffering vets.

National Mobilization to End the War and Build a New Economy

Beyond War,
A New Economy Is Possible for
Connecticut and the Nation:
Yes We Can!

We are in historic times. The Obama campaign mobilized millions of people, and his election has brought a new sense of hope and possibility to Connecticut and the nation. We are building on this momentum and the rich history that made the election of an African-American possible.

We are reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King’s courage and wisdom in connecting the issues of poverty, racism and war. In honor of his legacy, United For Peace and Justice has launched the BEYOND WAR, A NEW ECONOMY IS POSSIBLE: YES WE CAN! Campaign that will culminate its first phase on April 4th with a massive mobilization in New York City.

April 4th is the anniversary of Dr. King’s “Beyond Vietnam” speech in 1967 and, sadly, the anniversary of his death one year later. Our urgent call to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be linked to our call to help solve the current economic crisis by dramatically cutting military spending and, instead, investing in our communities.

Our campaign is a call for a new set of national priorities rooted in the vision and values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — a world without racism, poverty, or war, working across race, class, and gender lines to build a massive people’s movement to help make sure the Obama administration and the U.S. Congress are in alignment with the will of the people.

“Million Doors For Peace” Walks Connecticut Neighborhoods

“One young man came running out of the house when he heard we were petitioning against the war,” recounts Barbara Luciano, a union member with 1199/SEIU in Hartford and a volunteer for the Million Doors For Peace project. “His uncle was a soldier who had served in Iraq,” Barbara explained. “He was so depressed when he came back, he left for his home town in Puerto Rico. He committed suicide there. This was just before his veteran benefits came in the mail.” Not only did this young man sign the petition calling for the withdrawal of all American troops, but his entire household signed as well.

These stories and many others were heard by the 48 Hartford volunteers who spent Saturday, September 20 walking north- and south-end neighborhoods in this city of 120,000 people, mostly African American and Latino residents.

Knocking on a Million Doors for Peace

We have a great opportunity to reach out to the peace majority in Connecticut on Saturday, September 20. It's called the Million Doors for Peace.

http://milliondoorsforpeace.org/

Lekeisha Taylor is 15 years old; she has been active in social justice causes since she was 13.
Mims Butterworth is 90 years old, involved with peace activity for many decades.

Lee Mabry is a veteran; his son is a soldier on his way to a fourth tour in Iraq.

This Saturday, September 20, these local residents will be working to stop the war in Iraq.

On that day across the nation, 25,000 people will go door-to-door in their neighborhoods with a Peace petition to their Congressional representative. We want you to join us on September 20.

This single event will reach thousands of Connecticut people who don't come to rallies, forums, or other antiwar functions. But the door knocking will get them involved and allow us to grow our network of supporters. The non-partisan Million Doors campaign will also help focus the public's attention on the effects of the war on our economy.

Connecticut Opposes the War (COW) has been very active this year with anti-war events around the state (including a Student Peace Conference at Wesleyan University). Our goal has been to keep the War in the public eye, despite the fact that it has taken a back seat to many other issues. Won't you join us on Saturday, September 20th to keep the pressure on?

Here's how to get involved:
  1. Go to http://milliondoorsforpeace.org/ and register;
  2. Join us on September 20, 9:30 AM:
